A NovelUnabridged Compact Disc. From Richelle Mead, the #1 internationally bestselling author of Vampire Academy and Bloodlines, comes a breathtaking new fantasy steeped in Chinese folklore. For as long as Fei can remember, there has been no sound in her village, where rocky terrain and frequent avalanches prevent residents from self-sustaining. Fei and her people are at the mercy of a zipline that carries food up the treacherous cliffs from Beiguo, a mysterious faraway kingdom. Not for its content, so to speak, but because Richelle Mead is one of my favorite authors and yet I barely managed to push through Soundless. Where her other worlds stood out and swept me away, I felt distant and bored by this take on Chinese folklore. Soundless is an easy read with likable characters and a compelling love interest. Richelle Mead takes her time introducing characters, but the lack of any real flaws in them restricts their personalities and relationships. Issues of deafness, blindness, prejudice and conflicting loyalties add interest. The surprise at the end distracted from the story as a bit too easy of solution.
